Partie 1 — Ce qui est matériellement établi

La signature physique de l'événement

The starting point for any serious investigation into this case is seismic. Scandinavian sensor networks, originally designed to monitor tectonic activity and weapons testing, record two signals on 26 September 2022 that do not match an earthquake. A natural earthquake shows a gradual build-up of energy and a measurable focal depth of several kilometres. The two events recorded that day instead show a sudden pulse, rapid decay and zero depth: the signature of an underwater detonation. Their magnitude, estimated between 2.1 and 2.3, places the energy released in the order of several hundred kilograms of explosive equivalent per impact point.

The second body of evidence is operational. Operators observe a pressure drop that could not result from a gradual leak: the decompression is instantaneous and total. The third is visual and documented by coast guards and commercial satellite imagery: circles of bubbles several hundred metres in diameter appear at the surface, at locations matching the pipeline routes. The fourth is physical: sonar surveys and inspection dives show steel pipes forty millimetres thick, sheathed in reinforced concrete to weigh down the pipeline, not merely cracked but severed, with sections displaced and edges bent outward.

Pourquoi l’hypothèse de l’accident ne tient pas

A methodical investigation must rule out accident before considering deliberate action. Three elements rule it out. First, multiplicity: four ruptures across three distinct pipelines, laid dozens of kilometres apart, cannot be explained by a common material failure. Second, relative simultaneity: two series of events on the same day, seventeen hours apart, in an area where these pipelines had operated without major incident for a decade. Finally, morphology: a rupture from corrosion or fatigue produces a localised opening, not a torn-away section. None of the three national investigations concluded it was an accident.

L'état du gaz au moment de l'événement

A point often poorly reported deserves clarification, as it changes the interpretation of the environmental consequences. As of 26 September 2022, Nord Stream 1 had not delivered gas for several weeks and Nord Stream 2 had never entered commercial service. Yet the pipelines were not empty: they held a significant volume of technical gas kept under pressure, essential to maintaining the structure's integrity. It was this volume that escaped, producing one of the largest single methane releases ever documented. Published estimates vary by a factor of one to three depending on the calculation methods used, which should lead to handling these figures with caution — a point that many articles ignored by citing a single figure as though it were certain.

Ce qui a précédé l'événement et est souvent oublié

The physical destruction in September 2022 did not interrupt an ongoing flow. It sealed an interruption that had already taken effect. Between June and September 2022, deliveries via Nord Stream 1 had dropped from full capacity to 40%, then 20%, then a complete halt, each step justified by technical reasons that European buyers disputed. Nord Stream 2's certification had been frozen since February. The commercial and political break was therefore already complete before the physical break. This timeline is essential: it explains why the immediate effect on delivered volumes was nil, while the long-term effect was maximal. What was destroyed that day was not a flow, but an option to reverse course.

Partie 2 — L'objectif à quatre sphères : un fait, quatre mondes

C’est l’exercice le plus révélateur de l’affaire. Les faits matériels décrits ci-dessus sont à peine contestés par quiconque. Pourtant, selon la sphère d’information dans laquelle se trouve le lecteur, il reçoit un récit différent, une hiérarchie de faits différente et surtout des silences différents. Le tableau ci-dessous ne cherche pas à trancher : il rend visible la structure de chaque récit.

The lesson is methodological and extends well beyond this case. None of these four readings is entirely false: each one selects a subset of real facts and ranks them according to its own interests. A reader exposed to only one sphere does not have wrong information, they have incomplete information in a way they cannot detect from within it. • Faits importants recoupés par des parties indépendantes : instituts sismiques nordiques, opérateurs de réseaux, garde-côtes, imagerie satellitaire commerciale.
• Les trois enquêtes nationales convergent vers la qualification de sabotage délibéré, indépendamment de toute attribution.
• Réédition massive en chaîne : de nombreux articles citant des « sources de renseignement » remontent en réalité à un seul texte original, copié sans vérification.
• Les chiffres des fuites de méthane varient considérablement selon les publications, souvent présentés sans méthode de calcul ni marge d’incertitude.
• L'attribution est présentée comme établie dans plusieurs domaines, même si aucun tribunal ne s'est prononcé sur le fond.

The most important flag is chain reposting. A reader who finds the same claim in twenty articles feels it has been confirmed multiple times. Tracing citations back, one regularly finds that these twenty articles rely on a single source text, itself unverifiable. Counting articles is not cross-checking: cross-checking requires identifying genuinely independent information chains, which is precisely the metric Terra-OrB calculates.

Partie 4 — Chaîne d'impact par domaine

La leçon économique centrale

The usual reflex is to measure the impact of an energy shock by the size of the price spike. This is an analytical error. The spike is loud, dramatic, widely commented on — and temporary. What determines an economy's trajectory is the new baseline that settles in once the spike passes, because that is what feeds into ten-year investment plans. An industrialist decides to build a factory based on an assumption about long-term energy costs, not the price in a given December. In the European case, replacing pipeline supply, contracted over several decades, with liquefied supply exposed to global competition, creates a lasting cost gap with producing regions. This is the heaviest consequence of the case, and also the one that received the least coverage at the time.

Le précédent sécuritaire

Before September 2022, protecting undersea infrastructure was mainly a matter of technical safety: avoiding anchors, monitoring corrosion, mapping trawlers. It is now a matter of defence. European seabeds carry not only hydrocarbon pipelines, but most intercontinental data cables and a growing number of electrical interconnections. The demonstration in the Baltic is that these assets are reachable, hard to monitor continuously, and that their destruction can go without judicial attribution. Any organisation relying on a single physical link must factor this precedent into its risk analysis — this is true for a state as much as for a data centre operator.

L’angle mort environnemental

The massive methane release was treated as a dramatic fact for a few days, then practically disappeared from coverage. Two reasons explain this: the absence of an identified party responsible makes any remediation process impossible, and the absence of a shared measurement method makes the figures contestable. This case thus illustrates a rarely stated point: environmental damage with no established perpetrator and no agreed metric falls out of the public debate, regardless of its actual scale.

Partie 5 — Pourquoi une recherche conventionnelle échoue dans ce cas

Un lecteur qui interroge aujourd'hui un moteur de recherche ou un assistant conversationnel généraliste sur Nord Stream obtient, dans presque tous les cas, une réponse d'une trentaine de lignes construites sur trois à cinq pages dans une seule langue, presque toujours la sienne. Cette réponse n'est pas fausse. Il est structurellement partiel et mérite d’être mentionné de trois manières distinctes.

Biais linguistique

The ranking of results depends on the language of the query and the geographic location of the person making it. Asking in French, Russian, Arabic or Mandarin about the same case does not just return different articles: it returns differently selected facts, different legal classifications, and implicitly different parties held responsible. Measuring the real independence of information chains, rather than their number, completely changes the conclusion.

Ce qui change une méthode d'enquête

The value of a report like this one does not lie in containing more information, but in the fact that it sorts that information by an explicit status. A decision-maker does not need to be told what to think; they need to know, for each element presented to them, whether it is a fact recorded by a measuring instrument, an element submitted to an ongoing judicial procedure, a coherent but unproven hypothesis, or an unverifiable claim. This sorting is the only thing that allows sound decisions at the right level of confidence.
