How to detect emerging geopolitical risks

Signals are observations, not predictions

An increase in reporting may merit attention, but does not establish that a crisis will occur. Terra-Orb is never predictive. Use signals to prioritise questions and evidence gathering.

Compare against the local baseline

Check whether coverage is unusual for the country and topic, not merely large in absolute terms. A low-volume country can have a meaningful change while a routine high-volume story dominates global headlines.

Corroborate before escalating

Inspect first-publication times and source links. Separate independent reports from syndication, official statements from reporting and confirmed developments from allegations. Compare countries and information spheres.

Document uncertainty and revisit

Write down alternative explanations, gaps and the date of your assessment. Recheck as reporting evolves; corrections or new evidence can change the interpretation. Do not turn a tension score into a probability of conflict.
